What Is Student Intensive Services (SIS)?

Student Intensive Services (SIS) provides enhanced, targeted support for students with significant or intensive needs. SIS eligibility is often tied to specialized programming and state-level funding for students who require a high level of individualized instruction and services.

When Is SIS Considered?

SIS is typically discussed when:

• An IEP is already in place

•     The school determines that additional supports are needed beyond what is available in-house

•     The student requires intensive, individualized instruction or specialized settings

Understanding SISNA (Virginia)

The Students with Intensive Support Needs Application (SISNA) allows school divisions to request reimbursement for the additional costs of supporting students with complex needs.

Eligibility Indicators include:

• Active IEP

•     85% or more of the school day in special education services

•     Significant needs related to disabilities such as autism, multiple disabilities, or intensive behavioral support

What to Include in a SISNA Application

A. Student Profile

•     Diagnosis

•     Functional limitations

•      Assistive devices or supports used

B. Impact Statement, Describe how the disability affects:

•      Access to instruction

•      Participation in class

•      Assessment and communication

•      Mobility or safety

C. Required Supports, Examples include:

•      Assistive technology

•      One-on-one or shared paraprofessional support

•      Modified curriculum or extended time

•      Accessible classroom setup

Example Case: Jamie Doe

Disability: Cerebral palsy

Impact: Limited mobility and fine motor challenges

Needs:

•      Accessible desk

•      Speech-to-text software

•      Teaching assistant support

•      Modified assignment timelines
